Contour stickers are custom kiss-cut vinyl stickers, precision-cut with laser technology to match the exact shape of your design instead of a standard circle or rectangle. Upload one design for a single standout sticker, or add up to 30 different designs to one sheet for a more bespoke, mixed-shape feel. Choose from 6 sheet sizes, and print on matte white or transparent easy-peel vinyl.
What are contour stickers?
Contour stickers are custom kiss-cut vinyl stickers: each one is precision-cut with laser technology to follow the exact outline of your design, rather than being trimmed into a standard shape. Upload a single design for one standout sticker, or add up to 30 different designs to a sheet to mix fun shapes, custom fonts, and other bespoke details. Every sticker peels cleanly off the easy-peel vinyl sheet for that clean die-cut look with no fussy trimming.
How does the cutting technology work?
Zazzle's precision laser cutting system reads the outline of each uploaded design and kiss-cuts around it automatically. A few things to know before you upload:
- Designs need a transparent background for accurate cutting. PNG files with transparency work best.
- The cutting arm has physical limits. Very small or extremely narrow details may not cut cleanly.
- The design tool shows a real-time preview of exactly how the sticker and sheet will look after production (yellow cut lines), so you can check your outlines before ordering.
What sizes and materials are available?
Sheets come in 6 sizes:
| Size | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Tiny | 2" x 2" |
| Extra-small | 3" x 3" |
| Small - This size and up for Labels- See Reference below | 4" x 4" |
| Medium | 6" x 6" |
| Large | 8" x 8" |
| Extra-large | 14" x 14" |
Stickers print on two substrates: matte white and transparent. No white ink is used, so white areas in a design show up as the base material color, meaning white on the white substrate and see-through on the transparent substrate.
White or transparent: which should I use?
Use matte white for more vibrant designs, especially ones meant for dark surfaces. Use transparent for a more subtle effect, or for placement on light-colored or clear surfaces.
What are the design requirements and limitations?
- A sheet can contain up to 30 individually kiss-cut layers. If a design includes more, only the 30 largest objects are cut, and the rest need to be cut manually.
- You can intentionally connect individual sticker elements in the design tool if you want one larger sticker instead of several small ones.Simply move stickers closer together and you will see the yellow cut line join. Put more space between them and they can be cut individually.
Your design needs a transparent background to get a custom cut. This is the most common mistake we see, especially among newer creators. Without a transparent background, the system has no outline to follow, so it defaults to a basic rectangle shape instead of cutting around your design. If your sticker isn't coming out in the shape you expect, this is the first thing to check.
What are common use cases for contour stickers?
Popular uses include decorating laptops, phones, tablets, luggage, water bottles, notebooks, locker doors, and guitar cases. You'll find more design tips and inspiration in Zazzle's creator forums and design guidelines.
Using contour sticker sheets for address labels or other small, individual items
We have seen that Contour sheets are sometimes used for address labels, since each sticker on the sheet can be customized individually and the transparent substrate works well for this.
If you're designing a sheet for this use case you should ensure that:
- Each sticker boundary has its own kiss-cut boundary line (yellow cut line). This is what a customer will expect when they receive their product.
- Lock the sheet size in your merchandising options rather than leaving size open for the customer to choose.
- You do not use a sticker sheet size below “Small (4’x4 with max 3 stickers’)” as this will not produce well.
Recommended formats/layout for Small and up:
Here's why this matters: each individual sticker on a sheet scales down proportionally as the sheet size shrinks. On a smaller sheet, an address label's text and fine details can drop below the cutter's precision limits, which leads to blurry text, inaccurate die-cuts, or a sheet that fails production altogether. Locking the size prevents customers from selecting a smaller, cheaper sheet that produces a lower-quality result.
