Basic Design Tool Functionality (Adding Images & Text)

Creating a unique Zazzle product is now more intuitive, whether you are starting with a personal photo or using our built-in design assets. This guide streamlines the essential steps for using the Design Tool on both Desktop and Mobile.

    1. Adding Images & Icons

The foundation of any design is its visual elements. You can upload your own files or use free Zazzle resources.

    How to Add Images

    • Desktop: Click “Add Images” in the left menu. You can click Upload Images or simply drag and drop files directly into the panel.
      • Tip: Click and hold “Ctrl” to select multiple images from your local folder to upload at once!

    • Mobile: Click Personalize this design, then Edit using the Design Tool. Tap “Replace” or the (+) Add button and select Upload Images.
    • From Phone to Desktop: In the Desktop Uploads tab, select Upload from your phone to generate a unique QR code. Scan it with your phone to sync and upload mobile photos instantly.

    Using Zazzle Icons & Elements

If you don't have an image, click the Icons or Elements tab to browse thousands of free graphics. Once added, you can customize their border colors. For more information on Elements, please visit our Design Tool: Elements article.

    2. Manipulating Design Elements

Once an element is added, you must click/tap on it to reveal the editing menus.

    Core Adjustments

    • Scale: Use the (+) or (-) buttons (located in the Formatting tool), or drag the white corner boxes to resize.
    • Rotate: Use the arrow keys for fixed turns or type a precise degree.
    • Flip: Mirror your design horizontally or vertically.
    • Position: Click and drag the element to your desired location.

    Advanced Image Tools

    • Fill vs. Fit: Fill expands the image to the very edges (which may cause cropping), while Fit ensures the entire image stays within the "print safe" lines.
    • Filters & Cropping: Apply color filters (like Black & White or Sepia) or use the Crop tool to zoom in on specific parts of your photo.
    • Transparency: Under More Options, you can set "Whites as Transparent" so that white areas of your image take on the color of the physical product.

    3. Working with Text

Add a personal message by clicking the Text tab and selecting Add Text.

    • Styling: Change the font type, size, and color using the right-side panel (Desktop) or bottom menu (Mobile).
    • Spacing: Adjust Letter Spacing (distance between characters) or Line Spacing (distance between lines).
    • Curvature & Orientation: Use the Curvature slider to arch your text or toggle Orientation to stack letters vertically.

    4. Organization & Precision

    • Layers: Every element is on its own layer. Drag and drop layers in the list on the left hand side to change their "stacking order" - for example, to move text in front of an image.
    • Tiling: Turn a single icon or image into a repeating pattern (Basic, Half-Brick, etc.) using the Tiling tool.
    • Alignment & Distribution: Group multiple objects by holding Control (Desktop) and clicking them. Use the Align tool to center them or the Distribute tool to space them evenly.
    • Guidelines: Always keep Guidelines on. Ensure critical parts of your design stay inside the solid grey lines to avoid being cut off during printing.
